1. I want to build a home, where do I start?

The most successful projects that we have done have been created by a team of players that was formed at the start of the project. It's important that the whole team is onboard from the beginning otherwise you end up with designers being added to the project mid-stream, that don't understanding the native philosophy of the house. The team consists of:

   •  Owner
   •  Architect
   •  Landscape Architect
   •  Interior Decorator
   •  General Contractor

Assuming you have the property you want to build on or a property that you're considering and would like some input on, your first move would be to create your Architect/Contractor relationship. There is no set rule on which comes first, and if you would like some suggestions for architects please visit our
architect information page.

2. How long does it take to build a house?

There are two parts to building a house. The first is the design and city processing and the second is the actual construction of the house. The first part can vary widely depending on the city your working in and the magnitude of the project.

The design process consists of "programming" which is figuring out all of the features you want in the house. Then comes design development where the floor plan and elevations of the house are developed. At this point you generally go to the city for design review to see if your plan is acceptable to the city. Upon acceptance by the city, the next step is construction drawings, which turns the design into working plans that the contractor can use to build the house. These construction drawings are then submitted to the city for a building permit.

Once a building permit is issued by the city, construction can begin. Construction time is a function of how large the home is and how complex it is. Generally our homes start at 5,000 sq. ft. and go up from there. Our largest to date is 24,000 sq. ft. For a home in the 5,000 to 10,000 sq. ft. range it generally takes from 14 to 24 months to build.
